2024 Tax Checklist When Filing 2023 Returns


Taxes are coming... The IRS will begin accepting 2023 returns as early as January 29, 2024. Get prepped with this checklist on things you’ll want a good handle on well before April 15, 2024.


Your social security number (SSN) or tax ID number
Your identity protection PIN, if issued by the IRS
Your spouse’s full name, SSN or tax ID number, and DOB, if applicable
Dependent info, if applicable
Your income statements, such as W-2s, 1099s, and Schedule K-1s
Your tax forms for other types of income, such as self-employment or interest
Your tax deduction records, such as property tax, charitable donations, medical expenses, and health insurance
Routing and account numbers to receive your refund by direct deposit (or pay your balance due if you choose)

 

Visit the What’s New section of Publication 17 (2023), Your Federal Income Tax | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov) for updates and recent changes – these are important! Things like income tax brackets, retirement contribution limits, the gift tax exclusion and phase-out levels for Individual Retirement Account (IRA) deductions, Roth IRAs and the Saver’s Credit.
